Orphans Sponsorship

The sponsorship program for orphans initiated by FOREM and ODE, the Observatory of the Rights of the Child, was born after noticing a considerable number of orphaned children without status.

The former Minister of National Solidarity said that the national tragedy has been responsible for at least 250 000 orphans.

Improving children's health can not be accomplished without improving their living conditions. It seemed necessary to FOREM to initiate a sponsorship program for orphans without relocating the children. The idea is that the children remain is theie environment while they will benefit from material assistance provided by a vounteering mentor. This financial aid - although humble - would help provide a proper education, coverage of their healthcare needs and ensure a minimum entertainment.

This assistance has been estimated at least one euro per day, alittle over one dollar per day (2 500 to 2 800 DA per month) and if possible offer a few gifts during special occasions (beginning od school, Eid Celebration,etc.).

This assistance will enable the child to receive a monthly subsidy of 30 euros per month. For a household with three children, the aid will reach approximately an amount equivalent to the current monthly minimum wage.
Note that 8% of this amount will be deducted to cover the operating costs.

Choosing children:

Orphaned children are selected on the basis of following criteria:

  • Orphans without a father or without both parents.
  • Family, including the guardian have no other source of income,
  • existence of family cohesion,
  • orphan under the age of 16, in some cases less than eighteen years old orphans are suggested, especially if school performance is excptional or for any other justified reason.

Sponsor-sponsored relationship:

The sponsor is free to visit the sponsored child, send him gifts including during the beginning of school.
• The orphan is informed of the relationship;
• The child will send a letter to his/her sponsor every six months.
• For children who go to school, a school certificate is attached to the file.
