As any other ethnic group living in America Algerian Americans are exposed to the mass media 24 hours a day whether they are culturally isolated, linguistically isolated, fresh out of the boat, (FOB) or leave in a basement without a T.V. set (not quiet happening yet). As any other media consumer in this country, we find some stories great, some ridiculous and some okay. But what if you were asked to rank news stories of the year 2009?

As any other ethnic group living in America Algerian Americans are exposed to the mass media 24 hours a day whether they are culturally isolated, linguistically isolated, fresh out of the boat, (FOB) or leave in a basement without a T.V. set (not quiet happening yet). As any other media consumer in this country, we find some stories great, some ridiculous and some okay. But what if you were asked to rank news stories of the year 2009?

A new Zogby Interactive poll finds that the "balloon boy" hoax and the breakup of reality television stars Jon and Kate Gosselin are practically tied for top honors as the most ridiculous news story of 2009.  The "balloon boy" hoax was named as most ridiculous by 23% of Americans and the Jon & Kate break-up by 22%. Rounding out the most ridiculous stories of 2009 is Octomom giving birth to eight babies, rated as most ridiculous by 12% of adults and also the debate over the validity of President Obama's citizenship and birth certificate, named as the most ridiculous story by 11% of adults.

Republicans were especially incensed by "balloon boy", with 29% of Republicans naming this story as the most ridiculous.  Democrats were more likely to feel the validity of President Obama's citizenship and birth certificate was absurd, with 23% of Democrats naming this as the most ridiculous news story of 2009.

In legitimate news, politics dominated the most significant stories of 2009.  Americans said Barack Obama's inauguration as the United States' 44th president was the most significant story of the year, with 44% selecting it as the year's most newsworthy event. Sixty-nine percent of Democrats rated this the most significant story of '09 compared to only 23% of Republicans and 35% of independents.  The debate over healthcare reform legislation came in second with 27% of adults saying it was most significant.  Forty percent of Republicans rated this the top story compared to 17% of Democrats.

This interactive survey of 2,841 adults was conducted December 28-30,2009. A sampling of Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate.   Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, education to more accurately reflect the population. The margin of error is +/- 1.9 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.

As far as Algerians leaving around the planet are concerned, I am sure I can answer on behalf of all of them regarding the most significant story of the year of 2009, the most dramatic story of 2009 and the most ridiculous story of 2009.

The most dramatic story of 2009 is the soccer game between Algerian National Soccer team and the Soccer Egyptian team, when the Algerian Soccer team’s bus was stoned by Egyptian fans, and when three of the players were severely injured. Algerian team lost 2 to nothing in Cairo.

The most significant story will be the 90 minutes soccer playoff game between Algeria and Egypt in Sudan. The most significant moment will certainly be Antar Yahia’s magical kick that split the Nile over the pharaohs’ heads to let the Algerian team find their way to South Africa for the World Cup competition. One of the stories during this event is the biggest human air lift after the Berlin air lift from the 1440s- that will be registered in next years’ Guinness Record – which the Algerian government has organized to take the Algerian soccer fans from Algeria to Sudan to attend the game. 300 airplanes took off from Algeria and landed in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan.

And finally, the most ridiculous story of 2009 will be the Egyptian media madness after the loss of the soccer game in Sudan against the Desert Foxes. As this article is being written, Egyptians from all walks of life still cannot swallow the defeat of their team. They insulted the whole Algerian Nation with its people, government, history and culture. Ridiculous unprofessional media reactions, disrespectful Egyptian government official’s comments in the press and broadcast will throw this story high in the rank of ridicule for decades. I don’t think any other story will beat this ranking anytime soon… unless…. Unless in the next few days, destiny makes other plans during the African Cup next month and puts back the two teams together again.

It's more Algerian than Algerian American
If you're an Algerian and the stories you cited are the most significant once in 2009, than you've only lived the 2 last months of the year, trapped in your basement between www.youtube/algerie and canal algerie. lol

Re: Algerian Americans?
This is to the Guest that said it's either Algerian or American and not Algerian American. How about Irish, Italian, African, Mexican American. Is that okay? Besides, adding the Italian to American doesn't mean we're saying this person is more Italian than American. It's just describing the ancestry of the person and that's what makes America a great place to live in. You don't need to give up your roots and be a patriotic American.

In depends on your definition.
lgerian Americans?
It's either one or the other... It appears here that it's more Algerian than anything else....

This space tends to offer useful information to the Algerian Community living in the U.S. It includes the first, second and third generation as well. These last ones happen to be Americans from an Algerian origin; which in the market jargon is referred to as Algerian - Americans. For example, the common names you find in the main stream will be: African American, Native Americans, etc. Please visit the US Census website to get more educated.
Thanks for visiting.
